Switching from Online to Paper Course Evaluations to Increase Response Rates

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) is the trusted voice of the GI community. Founded in 1897, AGA has grown to include more than 16,000 members from around the globe who are involved in all aspects of the science, practice and advancement of gastroenterology. The AGA switched from online to paper course evaluations with Remark Office OMR to improve their course evaluation response rate. The following excerpt was provided by Mark Goetz, eLearning Manager at the AGA.

“Objective of the evaluation: The AGA Spring Postgraduate Course was held in Chicago, IL on May 7-8, 2011. The AGA has a strong interest in obtaining feedback from the attendees and will use this year’s evaluation outcomes to assess the educational content, format, and logistics of the course in order to produce improved postgraduate courses in the future.

Evaluation Methodology: A paper survey was distributed on-site to all 3,440 attendees of the 2011 Spring Postgraduate Course. This was a change from the online evaluation survey administered during last year’s Spring Postgraduate Course. This change was intended to increase the attendee response rate, and to gain more accurate ratings by providing the questions while attendees were experiencing the course live. The evaluation forms were given out with syllabus materials and the AGA address was provided for the option of mailing completed surveys in at a later time.

The response rate increased dramatically compared to previous years. One thousand one hundred fifty seven (1,157) attendees completed the survey this year, yielding a 34% response rate. This is higher than last year’s 6% response rate with the online survey, and we will continue to develop ways to increase the response rate in the future. “
